Why would someone constantly surround themselves with the concept of death and decay?
Artist and funerary specialist Babs Bakels has been endlessly fascinated by death from a young age. Radio producer Laura Stek, who prefers to ignore her own mortality, became intrigued by Babs: why would someone constantly surround themselves with the concept of death and decay?
Together, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Laura and Babs explore in six episodes how we deal with death, from the last breath to the afterlife. They attend a "better alive funeral," undergo a death meditation, visit a dissection room, and speak with experts on death rattles.
Meanwhile, we learn more and more about Babs' morbid fascination. "I make light of it, but in reality, I struggle every day with my fear of death. I cope by staring the monster in the face."
As a little girl, Babs Bakels played in cemeteries and buried small animals at her grandmother's campground. This unusual fascination has never left her. Her home is filled with skulls, taxidermy animals, and (art) historical books on death. As a student, she worked in a funeral home, and as a curator, she was one of the founders of the Funeral Museum Tot Zover.
